We’ve now left the West Country and moved up north to Manchester. But before we wave goodbye to the old place forever, here are a few of our favourite places, in no particular order.
Living in Warminster, Frome was our nearest ‘nice place’. It’s a charming town with a fantastic independent market and lots of unique shops and cafes. We’d often enjoy a Saturday brunch at the River House, followed by a mooch around the town.
Not far from Frome, Mells is the perfect village. It has everything – a quaint village shop, a fantastic pub and the beautiful walled gardens. You can also enjoy a fantastic walk along the river.
The Somerset Lavender Farm
Visit the Somerset Lavender Farm and you’ll feel as though you’re in Provence. Not only can you wistfully stroll through the lavender fields, you can also stock up on loads of gorgeous lavender-themed products, and enjoy a pot of tea and a slice of cake at their cafe.
We enjoyed a fabulous lunch here earlier in the year for my birthday. It was incredible. If you’re ever near Bristol, book a table and go. It’s gorgeous.
Hix Oyster & Fish House
Speaking of fantastic lunches, we recently drove down to Lyme Regis and enjoyed some wonderful food at Hix Oyster and Fish House. Lyme is well worth a visit, and Hix is the perfect place for a celebratory meal.
Dimpsey Shepherd’s Hut
How could I do a round up of the West Country without mentioning our wonderful stay at Dimpsey. This gorgeous shepherd’s hut is the perfect weekend retreat, complete with woodfired hot tub, fire pit and a friendly cat, it has everything you need to relax and recharge.
Bea’s Vintage Tea Rooms
Bath has a plethora of great cafes, but we fell in love with Bea’s when we first moved to the city two years ago. It’s the quintessential Bath tea room, with chintzy china and decadent cakes. Plus the staff are super friendly.
If you want a decent brunch in the West Country you head into Bristol. Brew was one of the first brunch places we found and we loved it.
Brace & Brown, Bristol
Located right next door to Brew is Brace & Brown, another brilliant brunch spot, made even more fabulous by its ‘bottomless brunch’ menu. Order dish after dish, eat like a king and pay a set price. And the food is fantastic.
So there you have it. A handpicked selection of some of our favourite places in the West Country.
Now we’ll have to discover some more up north. Wish our wallets (and waistlines) luck.
